Tēnā Tātou e Te Whānau,

Please take it easy as we get through these alert levels together. I understand some whanau are juggling mahi and distance learning with tamariki, so please if you feel overwhelmed, take some time to reset and only do what you can manage happily and stress free. Home life is the number one authentic learning environment for all of us, so I hope we are all taking time to appreciate being with whanau at home.

Kia kaha tātou ki te kori tīnana me te puta ki waho kia rongo i ngā hīhī a Tamanui-te-rā!

Noho haumaru, noho ora mai,

Kia ora e te Whānau,

I understand that there have been numerous resources shared at this time to support your child’s learning. If you have a specific resource in mind that you need further information or support with, please let Koka Chris know and we will work to find it for you.

If you need to talk ‘kanohi ki te kanohi’ we can meet virtually through a number of platforms or have a korero on the phone. The important message here is please reach out if you would like some support or ideas for your child/children at home. Koka Chris is your first port of call and she will put you in contact with the correct organisation/person.

For people with disabilities or autism and their support people, the Explore 0800 000421 phone service is available to provide advice or support. This includes advice or support around challenging behaviours. To access this service, you don’t need a referral and it doesn’t matter whether you’re new to Explore, currently on their waitlist or you’ve worked with them previously. The service is available Monday to Friday 9.00am–5.00pm. When you phone the 0800 number you will be connected with an administrator who will then book you an appointment with one of the specialists.

Hauora Tairāwhiti Support (VNT)

I have been looking through information about managing your child through the next few weeks. Much of this information has been put together to help children with Autism help but these ideas and strategies will help you with your child with other disabilities as well – in fact likely to also be useful for your children who don’t have a disability.

All children and young people require support from caregivers during times of stress and uncertainty, such as those we are facing now with the state of emergency due to the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Coping with the unknown, navigating school closures, abrupt changes in routines, loss of connections with teachers and fear around contracting the virus are burdens for all. Caregivers play an important role in helping children and young people understand the changes and process their related feelings. Your child with a disability is likely to need additional support as they are likely to face additional challenges related to comprehension, communication, difficulty understanding, an insistence on sameness and a greater likelihood of anxiety.

Take care, look after yourself and your whanau,

Lyn Davis
